Out of the mouth of a babe

President Obama held a town hall format meeting today at the University of New Orleans. After entertaining several questions from adults, nine year old Terrance Scott got a chance to ask a question.

Terrance's question: "Why do people hate you?"



I thought the President did a pretty good job of answering the question, explaining that a lot of it is just politics and that there are also some people who are frustrated about the economy, losing their homes, losing their jobs, losing their health insurance, etc.

Of course there are still those who just plain hate the President too, and we all know that. Apparently so does the next generation of America's children.

Katrina Remember

Jane Hamsher has an excellent post up about Hurricane Katrina.

Barack Obama has said, now that we approach the second anniversary the following:

America failed the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast long before that failure showed up on our television sets. America failed them again during Katrina. We cannot -- we must not -- fail for a third time. But tragically, that's what's happening today. And that's what needs to change. I am here to remember this, but also to look ahead. We need to rebuild this city. And we need to tend to the foundation that we rebuild upon.

This is the first post of many, because with 2 years since we watched as people died and very little accomplished for the black communities, we should never forget.

Update: [12/10] Jefferson has been re-elected. In a democracy, the people get the government they vote for. The important thing to be watching in this case is whether Jefferson will get back his Committee assignment.

Louisiana desperately needs his [Jefferson's] influence on the committee assignments he had. If Pelosi does not reappoint him and does not replace him with someone from the LA (or perhaps even MS) delegations she will be seen as slamming the door on Katrina victims which will look bad on Democrats at a time when Katrina will be a major issue in the LA and MS statewide races in 2007 and the Senate and presidential race in those states in 2008. Voters in those states are angry at the Bush administration and the GOP and the Democratic control of both houses is a golden opportunity for Democrats to make gains in those states. Another very hard decision for Pelosi to make.
